May 22: The cold, wet Sierra presented quite a shock to the senses after the near 100F degree temps in the valley. The elevation at this point east of Ham's Station is 6,500 ft. Hunkered down in the freezing mist, I was glad to have brought good reading material. Another thing, with the thermometer reading 30F and with the soggy wet conditions, I was grateful to be in a tent that has never leaked a drop (Sierra Designs "Flashlite" 2-person tent) in many years of service. Since I prefer a goose down sleeping bag, dry conditions are essential in order to maintain warmth. As it was, I was snug as a bug in a rug!
